The "Berserk" game was originally slated for a Japanese release only, according to IGN, and is scheduled for a September 21 launch. The publisher will now also bring the title to its fans in the US.
"Berserk" is a Japanese dark fantasy manga series written and illustrated by Kentaro Miura. The manga was first released in 1989, and it is still being released monthly by Japanese magazine Young Animal.
This was not the first game adaptation to be made for the manga. The first game, "Sword of the Berserk: Guts' Rage," was released on the Dreamcast in Japan in 1999, followed by a North American and European release in 2000.
The upcoming "Berserk" game will be developed by Omega Force, the same studio responsible for the "Dynasty Warriors" series. The Omega Force influence is clearly shown in the early screenshots of "Berserk," with its "Dynasty Warriors" hack-and-slash formula.
Players will take control of "Berserk" protagonist Guts, and he will need to fight against hordes of enemies using his Great Sword.
"Berserk" is notorious for its use of graphic violence, and it will be no different in the game, judging from the amount of blood shown on the screenshots and the trailer.
The first few episodes of the "Berserk" anime was also aired in Japan this month, while it is being simulcast on Crunchyroll. The anime covers the "Black Swordsman" and "Conviction" arc of the manga, and is a follow up to the "Berserk: The Golden Age Arc" anime film trilogy.
The game will also cover the "Golden Age Arc" up until the "Hawk of the Millennium" arc.
The "Berserk" game promises full-blown bloody hack-and-slash mayhem, and will be released on the Playstation 4, Playstation Vita, and PC in Fall 2016.
