'Shenmue 3' Development In Full Swing For 2017 Release; 'Shenmue' Director Returns To Work On New Title
Jazz RosinThe director of the first two "Shenmue" titles is set to make his comeback for the latest title, "Shenmue 3."
The development for the highly anticipated sequel to the classic video game title "Shenmue" is charging full steam ahead, and fans cannot wait to see the final product when it comes out late next year.
In the latest update on the game's Kickstarter page, Keiji Okayasu, the game director for the first "Shenmue" game on the Sega Saturn, is announced to be joining the "Shenmue 3" production.
Yu Suzuki will still be head director, with Okayasu as his sub-director, the same role he had on the first two "Shenmue" titles.
According to Okayasu, he was not able to stay in the production team for "Shenmue 2" as he left Sega to start his own company studiofake.
Speaking about Suzuki, Okayasu said, "The other thing that really stuck with me was Yu-san saying how he wanted it to be a legitimate evolution of the RPG."
When "Shenmue" was being developed, RPG's were all the rage, and Okayasu pointed out that certain standards have already been set for the genre.
"But Yu-san was very against all of that,' Okayasu said, "saying it did not have to be that way."
The "Shenmue"director also said that he wanted to finish the game and do everything to satisfy the fans, both for people who played the first two "Shenmue" games and those who will be playing for the first time.
The announcement for the upcoming "Shenmue 3" was met with much fanfare during Sony's E3 2015 presentation.
"Shenmue 3" director Yu Suzuki launched a highly successful Kickstarter campaign for the game, meeting its initial target of $2 million in under eight hours.
The game received a GuinnessWorld Record nod for the fastest video game to raise $1 million in pledges on a crowdfunding platform, and the second fastest Kickstarter project overall, only behind Pebble Watch.
"Shenmue 3" is scheduled to be released on the Playstation 4 and PC towards the end of 2017.
