Kickass Torrents News: KAT Founder Drags Google Into Case; Can They Still Return?
C. de LacyArtem Vaulin, the man behind Kickass Torrents, is prepping to counter the US extradition request that is scheduled on November. His party says that if Kickass is a criminal operation, then Google should be worried just as well.
Courtesy of Torrent's Freaks' report, Kickass Torrents' founder and his party are already preparing to fight the extradition request of the US Authority. Vaulin's lawyer even stated that running a torrent site is not a criminal offense.
"If KickassTorrents is a criminal operation, then Google should start worrying," the lawyer stated.
Back in July, Artem Vaulin was arrested by a Polish law enforcement officer and was held at the local prison up until now. He was arrested on behalf of the US authorities that have now requested him to be handed over to the US just two weeks ago.
According to Val Gurvits, who's a part of the US defense team for Vauilin, the arrest has been extended to November 19 apparently. The hearing is expected to commence this month.
The defense team is making a point that running a torrent search engine could not be a criminal offense on either Poland or Ukraine.
"The primary basis for challenging extradition is that the acts of which Artem is accused do not constitute a crime in Poland where he is detained, nor in the Ukraine where he lives and works." Vaulin's party emphasizes.
KAT's defense counsel further explained that a search engine operation like Kickass Torrent isn't a crime in the United States as well. If it was, then they concluded that search engines like Google could be put into trouble just as well.
"In fact, in my opinion operating an index search engine cannot constitute a crime in the United States because secondary infringement is not criminalized under US law. If KickassTorrents is a criminal operation, then Google should start worrying," Gurvits says.
Still, getting involved in such scenarios isn't something new with Google. The search engine has been involved with such case. The late isoHunt, which is another popular torrent before, had the same argument, but still lost.
If this would be the only counter that Kickass Torrents will have under its sleeve, there's a slim chance that they will be back in action soon enough or worse, Vaulin could actually end up with the US authority for losing the case.
