'Ratchet And Clank' PS4 Pro: Running Game On 60FPS Was 'Never In The Cards,' Insomniac Says

Insomniac Games has recently clarified why the PlayStation 4 Pro version of "Ratchet and Clank" would not be running on 60fps.

The developer has explained how "Ratchet and Clank" will utilize the power of the new PS4 Pro in a post on the Playstation Blog.

"For users with a 4K TV, you'll be able to play 'Ratchet & Clank' at a much higher resolution, and if your TV supports it, in HDR using an HDMI 2.0 cable," Insomniac Games said. "PS4 Pro users with a 1080p TV will see a big increase in gameplay image quality as well."

However, while the game will get an upgrade on image quality, most people are disappointed that "Ratchet and Clank" is not receiving a similar boost to its framerate as well.

"Come on... A game like this should have been 60fps for the Pro. That's a shame," one NeoGAF user commented.

"Yeah. Like if Nintendo got Mario running 60 FPS on Wii U why not this?" another NeoGAF forumer asked. "It's not even real 4K."

As a response, Insomniac Games' community manager James Stevenson explained on the forums why players will not be getting 60fps for "Ratchet and Clank."

"The game is designed to run at a locked 30," Stevenson said, "so making frame rate changes was never in the cards. Sorry."

Back in 2009, the developer has already expressed its stance on creating 60fps games in a blog post on its official website.

"It means that framerate is still important to us here at Insomniac, but it's not on the same pedestal it was before," Insomniac Games' Mike Acton wrote. "And that 'Ratchet and Clank Future: A Crack in Time' will probably be Insomniac's last 60fps game."

"And keep in mind that I'm certainly not saying 60 fps has no value or that framerate isn't important. It's simply about focusing on what we think is most important and devoting resources to that," Acton clarified. "So that when you pick up our games, you know you're going to get an awesome graphical experience. Along with great fun."
