'Goblin' Beats 'Descendants Of The Sun' Popularity; Gong Yoo, Lee Dong Wook's Romance Reason For High Ratings?

In less than two weeks, Total Variety Network Korean drama "Goblin" has dominated both domestic and international viewership. Moreover, according to recent reports, the drama surpassed the epic hit military romance drama "Descendants of the Sun."

According to a report given from Good Data Corporation, "Goblin" surpassed "Descendants of the Sun." The company is reported to gather data from netizen responses on news sources, blogs, community sites, social media and videos. It was revealed that the tvN's series scored 12,500 points in buzzworthy TV drama ranking in one week where it took "Descendants of the Sun" to get that points in over five weeks.

Four episodes in, the drama has recorded viewership ratings of 6.9 percent, 8.3 percent, 12.7 percent and 12.3 percent, respectively.

According to Daumsoft's data,as cited by Yonhap News, during the debut week of the fantasy series, "Goblin" was one of the most discussed TV dramas on the online platforms. It was mentioned over 21,000 times and 40,737 times on the social media platforms on Dec. 2 and Dec. 3, respectively.

Moreover, the drama also reportedly beat the SBS' drama "The Legend of the Blue Sea" which starred  Jun Ji Hyun and Lee Min Ho. The SBS TV's "Legend of the Blue Sea" scored 256 points, trailed by the MBC singing competition show "The King of Mask Singer" with 236.7 points and the SBS medical series "Dr. Romantic" with 223.9 points.

With the popularity of "Goblin", one report cited by Inquistr tackled that the bromance between Gong Yoo and Lee Dong Wook's characters are said to be contributing so much to the hype. Kdram fans have reportedly noticed the primary romance of the two and some even pointed out that it's better that the chemistry of the two male leads to Kim Go Eun and Yoo In Na.

"Goblin" airs very Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. KST on tvN.
