LG's Plans To Merge Display Divisions: What Does It Mean For The Business?
Cris Xander JulianoLG is planning to merge its current five display divisions to just three. The said divisions include TV, mobile display, OLED, IT, and advanced display.
After the merge, TV, mobile display, and IT will be the only ones left to continue. According to phandroid, this move by LG is being done to focus on OLED display because of its popularity and advanced technology. LG also provides display to other OEMs like Apple, which is currently using LCD on its iPhones, but will change to OLED on their next flagship. It is not yet confirmed if other OEMs will make the same transition. However, LG believes that focusing on OLED will be for the future growth of the company.
Businesskorea reports that the three remaining display divisions will be led by Vice President Hwang Yong-gi, Vice President Choi Hyung-seok, and Vice President Jeong Kyong-deuk for TV, mobile display, and IT divisions respectively.
LG will also reorganize their divisions by product. First, the TV division will be speeding OLED by merging the latter to LCD TV. Second, the mobile display division will change from LCD panels to plastic OLEDs.
It is reported that LG invested $856.16 million to increase P-OLEDs, which is being used in smartphones. Thus, the mobile display division will manage the development and production of P-OLEDS.
Lastly, the IT division acquired part of the other divisions through the advanced display division.
LG also merged the OLED lighting division to the TV division, automotive display division to the mobile display division, and industrial display division to the IT division.
LG's plan to merge its display divisions to improve the OLED business is for the future expansion of the company. By making this commitment, other OEMs may want to begin shifting their displays into OLED as well.
