‘Overwatch’ Latest News & Update: ‘Overwatch’ Comic Confirms Game’s First LGBT Character, Gets Banned In Russia For Showing ‘Gay Propaganda’
Jackie Villegas"Reflections," the latest "Overwatch" comic, recently went live, revealing the first-person shooter video game's first LGBT character. The comic, which was focused on Tracer, the video game's first Hero character, was a holiday issue involving many of the other "Overwatch" cast members.
But apart from telling a delightful holiday story, "Reflections" confirmed an "Overwatch" mystery that fans of the video game have long been speculating on. In the comic, Tracer shares an intimate moment with Emily, the girl with whom she appears to have been living with. This confirms what "Overwatch" fans have long suspected - and even hoped for - about the pixie-like character.
While Emily is not a member of the "Overwatch" crew, she and Tracer seem to have been dating for some time. After opening their Christmas presents, the two headed to a holiday dinner hosted by Tracer's fellow "Overwatch" Hero, Winston.
The revelation about Tracer's sexuality is a real game-changer in terms of LGBT representation in video games - and in popular culture. Tracer is one of the most visible characters in "Overwatch'; she is even featured - by herself - on the game's cover. The fact that Blizzard has confirmed that one of the video game's most popular characters is a member of the LGBT community is thus a big deal.
While this is a step forward for Blizzard, the news doesn't exactly come as a surprise to many "Overwatch" fans. Tracer has long been paired with another female character: Widowmaker, her primary enemy in the in-game story. Blizzard Entertainment has also teased that there several LGBT characters in the "Overwatch" cast.
Following the big revelation about Tracer, many fans responded with praise and support for "Overwatch." However, not everyone was pleased. Mashable reports that "Reflections" has been banned from the Russian version of the "Overwatch" site and that when accessed, a message appears, saying (in Russian): "In accordance with Russian law we cannot share these comics with our players from the Russian Federation territory." A Blizzard spokesperson has confirmed that the studio is unable to bring the latest "Overwatch" digital comic to fans in the region.
