Clash-a-Rama: The Inspiration Behind The 'Clash Of Clan' Animated Series

Jomst C.

When the "Clash of Clans" launched, the son of Rob La Zebnik introduced the writer to the game. LaZebnik, the writer and producer of The Simpsons, was hooked immediately. The game instantly spread amongst the staff of the animation. The game became an obsessions with the staff as they even creating a Simpsons clan in-game.

"I'd say any bad joke that's been on The Simpsons for the last four or five years, you can attribute to Clash," writer Joel Cohen, stated during an interview.

Along the line Cohen, La Zebnik and co-writer John Frink, got into a side project to make the addiction into a productive output. Inspired by the game, the writers set and do what they are good at. They created storylines of different available units and placed them in hilarious situations, then the idea was presented to the game creator, Supercell, and the result is "Clash-a-Rama," a Youtube series that makes an animated show out of Clash of Clans and Clash Royale.

The release of the animated series is weekly, and the recent release was the holiday-themed episode "12 Days of Clashmas". At the average of 10 minutes per episode, the episode was about the off time of characters and what they do on the holidays.

Although the game is very popular and has a massive advertisement drive on sporting events, the game does not have an actual story which made the animated series more interesting.

"There's not a ton of backstory to the game and characters, so it was great for us to say 'This is our take on their universe,' and be able to define who some of these characters are," says LaZebnik. "On one hand, you do have character rules about how they fight, how they interact with other troops. But beyond that, we were able to sort of really attack it ourselves creatively."

The game Creator Supercell has been very involved in the series creation, pitches and ideas goes trough the company before making it into an actual episode, but according to LaZebnik, freedom is given to them in terms of creativity and show crafting.

The animated series does not have a very deep story but the game creators developed a funny feel around the game, especially on promoting it. Commercial such as "Rules of the Duel" for Clash Royale, The SuperBowl ad for Clash of Clans supported that mood. Character designs were from Rough Draft Studios that has a naughty clever addition to it on the actual characters in-game with voices provided by veteran voice actors like Tress MacNeille, Rachel Dratch and Charlie Adler.

Cohen explains that the series has no intention of attracting people to try the game rather just to give something back to the game's community. With a lot of inside jokes, references from other games from the Supercell, jokes are appreciable only if the games has been played.

"It's great that they look at it so closely, because we've looked at these things so closely while producing them, that we really appreciate that they appreciate the little things we've done," Frink cited.

There is no exact mention on how long the series would go but it is expected to run for a short number of weeks still. And for the three writer fans, who are still actively playing the game, creating the animated series gave them a new perspective about the game and playing games.
