'Wonder Woman' Actress Lynda Carter Speaks On Feminist Issues Surrounding The Character; Ready To Pass The Torch To Gal Gadot
Dannel Picaccio Camille Perez Lozano"Wonder Woman" is apparently a hit in the making, with Gal Gadot taking the titular role to new heights. This, however, is not the first time the hero will be given her light -- and the successor may finally be blessed by the original.
The DC mainstay and Justice League foundation Diana Prince, or more popularly known as Wonder Woman, has become a household name in her own right, being both a superhero character and a female icon. Asked about her perspective of the character, original actress Lynda Carter spoke on the potential direction in which the next one in line could go, as well as how she stands as an example to the feminist community.
Straits Times writes that the 65-year-old Carter, who played the same superhero in 1970's TV show, is ready to pass the throne to the existing portrayer of the character.
"What I find interesting is that they didn't look at the larger picture. I agree that the issue of gender equality is much larger than any character is and I understand that a comic-book character should not be representative of something that is that important. I agree with that," Carter said.
What she disagrees with is the idea about Wonder Woman simply being a sex object. She believes that Wonder Woman is an iconic defender; even saying that she is" archetypal."
The former Wonder Woman star believes that there is no reason to judge the character due to the skimpy outfit -- as Superman wears one that is not entirely as plain. As far as the question of her ethnicity goes, Carter said that she is half-Mexican, which is ideally comparable to the fact that Gadot is Israeli. Such implication says that Wonder Woman is not to be stuck with the label that she has to be "white" or American in descent. After all, she is Amazonian.
In other news by Cinema Blend, new photos from the "Wonder Woman" set have surfaced, showing Diana's Themysciran costume prior to her venturing into the cruel world. She can be seen holding the "God Killer" sword, one which fans can recall to be an all-powerful weapon.
"Wonder Woman" is slated to be released in June 2, 2017. It will star Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, and is directed by Patty Jenkins.
