2017 Will Be A Big Year For Artificial Intelligence; But It Might Cost Jobs
Ceage SottoNext year will bring new improvements to the growing capabilities of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Earlier in 2016, a group of Silicon Valley companies that include Facebook has shown new AI tech, it comes in the form of chatbots that perform similarly to Apple's Siri.
According to a Market Watch, 2017 will bring bigger and more profound changes in AI technology. In IHS Dan Wilingsky's point of view, AI will directly assume commands given by its human counterpart. It would be present in bot-like scenarios that include social engagement to social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook.
The scope of AI applications does not end there; it can also be extended to other applications. Tesla's autopilot has already made major advancements in self-driving cars that need artificial intelligence. Amazon has also recently unveiled a flying warehouse that can deliver packages with the help of autonomous drones.
New AI technology can also venture into more sophisticated avenues, like healthcare and agriculture. DARPA has unveiled prototype robots that can move like a human being and think like one. In short, 2017 aims to bring an AI software that can learn and adapt in its own will. A good software can also make the hardware smarter.
Last November, Goldman Sachs called AI as the top technology of the information era. The multinational finance company has predicted that the advances of autonomous machine learning can open up a new niche in the multi-billion tech industry. It will make artificial intelligence a service that could do both easy and complicated tasks without human intervention.
Mark Zuckerberg has already featured Jarvis in one of his seasonal messages. The tech mogul has spent at least 100 hours programming Jarvis to become his home AI assistant. Jarvis' artificial intelligence algorithm allows it to respond to the Facebook founder's voice command. Jarvis can perform certain tasks in Mark Zuckerberg's house.
Although automation seems to be a good thing that AI will bring in the future, many are wary that it will eventually take over human jobs. In a post by Fox Business, improving AI will enable automation of tasks that have long required human labor. Consequently, they will also have an effect on the current livelihoods of millions of Americans.
Workers that rely on these jobs think that artificial intelligence is a scary proposition. We are not yet sure how these things will be addressed, but 2017 will be a big year for AI technology.
