Garmin Drive 51/61 Links With Smartphones For Real-Time Traffic, Live Parking & More
Athena DeeGarmin's Drive GPS system just got an upgrade. The company has just confirmed that its line of navigation devices will soon be delivering free live services that are expected to catalyze changes in driver behavior.
This development is hand-in-hand with the company's commitment to modernizing portable navigation devices. As confirmed on the Garmin Newsroom, all four models of the device -- namely, Garmin Drive, Garmin DriveSmart, Garmin DriveAssist, and Garmin DriveLuxe -- received enhancements.
Users of Garmin's line of in-car satellite navigators can now take advantage of driver alerts that will provide them with warnings for red light cameras, train crossings, and upcoming sharp curves. To make navigating simpler, the system has a Real Directions feature that will inform users of any landmarks or tall buildings within the area.
Garmin Drive 51/61 is the line's entry-level model. It can provide its users with real-time traffic information - as long as it is paired with a smartphone through Bluetooth. The device also offers Parkopedia and LiveTrack. The former will offer real-time parking data, while the latter will allow its users to share their current location with family or friends.
The DriveSmart 51/61 has WiFi functionality in order to gain easy access to a wireless map. Meanwhile, the DriveAssist 51 comes with an integrated, built-in dashboard camera that comes in handy with regard to alerts for Lane Departure Warnings and Forward Collision. Real Vision also displays live camera view of the vehicle's surroundings, with an arrow pointing to the destination. It also has a feature that will notify drivers whenever the car in front begins to move.
Lastly, the DriveLuxe 51, is the premium model that has all of the aforementioned features - except the dash cam. It also comes with a metal contraption that can hold the device with a magnetic mount.
Starting February 2017, "consumers can benefit and rely" on these navigators. "Free live parking and traffic, plus new travel information, lets drivers enjoy the actual ride and save precious time," said Garmin VP Dan Bartel.
According to Auto Evolution, Garmin will also be launching the IDVR or intelligent driving video recorder, which is a smart dash cam that can be integrated behind the rearview mirror.
