Mariah Carey's New Year Gaffe Shows How Important Pre-Recorded Voices Are; Beyonce, Katy Perry & Taylor Swift Had Similar Expreiences
Ceage SottoIn relation to Mariah Carey's recent new year lip-syncing gaffe, pre-recorded vocals is a norm to many of today's artists. There are in fact many acts that utilize a form of pre-recorded audio to go along with their concerts.
Billboard has already weighed in Carey's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve meltdown in New York. Music artists often rely on a stream of data feeds that go behind the scenes during a show.
The digital pre-recordings have multiple applications. They can range from simple vocal enhancements like octave doubling to "singing to track," which helps artists breathe after dancing in tune with their hit songs.
Rap artists even often tour with only prerecorded tracks. In this era of sampling and remixes, even some alternative rock bands use the trick. Whether they are on a tour or in a studio, vocalists would often have digitally layered tracks to improve a song's sound quality.
To be fair to extremely talented artists like Sia and Adele, Mariah did commit some mistakes. It will probably be a YouTube hit for a long time, but there are also other artists that were caught lip-syncing during their concerts.
Talented singers often use pre-recorded voices to make them sound better when they are feeling off-tune. These artists have a rigorous schedule that would often have an effect their singing. Singers like Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, and Beyonce sometimes reportedly have to rely on lip-syncing just to give their fans a show.
Moreover, failing to impress viewers would destroy their careers and canceling concerts when they are off tune would also give them bad press. That's why regardless of how they are feeling, the show must always go on.
Katy Perry suffered a similar incident that made her sound way off key during 2013 NRJ Music Awards. Although she sounded different, she was still cool about it and finished singing Roar. The pre-recorded voice probably did not play and that needed her to use her real voice.
Katy's former best friend and now rival Taylor Swift also had her own share of singing flats on live TV. Everybody knows how talented Taylor is but, in some of her performances, she sounds off tune. You can't fault her because she's been busy giving her heart out at her concerts. This is why lip-syncing is needed in the industry.
Queen B was also busted lip syncing when she was performing one of her hit songs. Beyonce definitely has the voice to impress her fans but even she had to lip sync when she's dancing all over the stage and singing at the same time.
Artists are human and they need help whenever needed. Clearly, others would criticize such gaffes, despite the possible external and internal influences that can ruin an artist's show.
