Hardware Wildcard ZMorph Showcases Multi-Headed 3D Printer
Jomst C.Although it looks like an out of this world space craft, the ZMorph 2.0 SX is a very powerful, multi-tool 3D printer gauged for the professional consumer market. ZMorph has been around for quite some time, but the 2.0 SX is their latest release in the 3D printing industry. It features multiple tool heads which include a laser, a standard plastic extruder, a CNC router, and a dual-head extruder for a variety of colors.
Przemek Jaworski, ZMorph's founder, made the system when he was working as an engineer in London. Jaworski figured that he'd need a machine that could manage several materials, a variety of 3D design systems and has multiple tool heads. He found that there was no such device which fit his preferences or his budget, so he made his own.
The entire ZMorph 2.0 SX is so flexible that it can be adjusted to fit different jobs in a matter of seconds. Jaworski was able to remove a dual-material plastic extruder and stick on a CNC system on stage. It can also mix two colors in a model, an industry first for FDM-style printing.
Tech judge, Jonathon Triest, said that the printer's design is excellent. He also said that it's as if Apple designed the printer. Triest's encounter with ZMorph was with their 3D printed clock, and now ZMorph has launched the 2.0 device at CES.
The multiple head unit comes in two options, a dual-head printer at $2,269 and a full five-head printer at $3,890. The company ships internationally and is selling to designers and product developers. The machines would be ideal for an educational environment, but not quite yet a consumer device.
Other laser and CNC systems usually feature only a head or two. ZMorph's completely modular design ensures that a lot can be done with their machine aside from simple projects. ZMorph also won as a wildcard in the TC Hardware Battlefield stage.
