YouTube Now Asking for Users' Full Names; the 153 People Who Dislike This News are Probably Flamers

Tim Frederick

YouTube is notorious for having comments sections that are usually as entertaining as many of the videos themselves; that is if you're entertained by spam, flame wars, and endless comments questioning the personal taste of anyone who dislikes a video (and who isn't?).

Google, owners of YouTube, has now decided to begin syncing YouTube accounts with those users' Google+ accounts, which require a real name to create, and thus will begin asking those users with both accounts whether they wish to post comments using their real name, presumably in an effort to improve the quality of user comments on the site.

If the user declines the request, a new screen pops up asking them to justify their reason for not wanting to use a real name with their account, though sadly the "Mind your own damn business Google" option isn't yet available. Either way, users are not forced to use their real name, and can continue to use the username they originally signed up with.

Whether this policy will be actually change anything remains to be seen. More than likely, anyone who takes great joy in flaming other users, flaming videos, or flaming the flames of other flamers, is not going to agree to attach their name to those fiery comments.

And even if they did, it's unlikely that would actually deter most people from changing how they comment; one need only look to the stupidity most people post on their Facebook pages (and in front of their 'friends' no less) to know that people aren't afraid of making a fool of themselves, anonymous or not.

Will you agree to use your real name when posting comments on YouTube from now on? And if so, will this in any way affect your commenting style? Leave us a comment (real name optional) below. Just don't flame me!
