Facebook Video Ranking Changes In Newsfeed & Strategy To Tackle Fake News Revealed

Facebook has already made it clear that it will go hard on fake news and now it is altering the way it ranks videos on users' newsfeed. As per the new video algorithm, the amount of time users spend on watching the video will improve its rankings. Facebook, this time, is also taking into account the duration of the videos. It will look at the "percent completion" to find out the kind of videos users prefer and rank them accordingly. In order to avoid penalizing long videos, Facebook will consider "percent completion" more seriously for long videos.

"Today's update may also help prevent hoaxes and fake news from appearing in Trending because the updated system identifies groups of articles shared on Facebook instead of relying solely on mentions of a topic," Will Cathcart, vice president of product management, has stated.

Meanwhile, Facebook's research scientist Seyoung Park and product manager Abhishek Bapna has stated in a Facebook blog post that the change in newsfeed video ranking will help "adjust the value we give to how much of a video is watched." As a result, Facebook pages should now pay extra attention in creating relevant and engaging videos suited for the target audience. A length of a video will depend on the message that needs to be communicated to the audience.

Moreover, Facebook has also revealed that it will determine trending news based on the number of sources reporting the news rather than number of readers reading it. This will enable Facebook to provide a broader range of events and news and make sure that the trending topics real world events being covered by various news outlets. This will also ensure fake news is not trending on Facebook, reports The Sydney Morning Herald. Stay tuned on Mobile & Apps for more updates on Facebook's strategy to kill fake news and rank videos.
