Tesla Model 3 Buyers Take Back Reservations As Elon Musk Gets Chummy with Donald Trump
Louise BonquinTesla is on the verge of losing many orders for its Model 3 cars as Elon Musk collaborates with US President Donald Trump. Some who already placed orders said they rather donate the reservation money to charity.
One buyer named Colin Niloc tweeted on Jan. 31, "Cancelled my early reservation and will be donating the $1k to charity instead. Kills me as a TSLA fan but need to take stand." The action was in protest after Trump formally orders ban on people from some Muslim countries.
This directive earned significant negative feedback from around the world but the present US President thinks this is the right thing to do to protect his nation and people. As it turned out, the ban did not only affect number of people but there are businesses that were directly hit by the impact of the order too.
For instance, Uber is already feeling the effects of its CEO's association with Trump as people started to unsubscribed to its service. The company's drivers also demonstrated their protest by refusing to pick-up clients at the JFK International Airport.
Now, it appears that Tesla is next, since CEO Elon Musk recently agreed when Trump asked him to serve on his Strategic & Policy Forum and he even attended the manufacturing council gathering. Moreover, Musk asked his Twitter followers to read Trump's order and pitch in suggestions on how it can be rectified for the better.
Since then, Tesla customers started to cancel pre-order transactions for the Model 3 cars. There are about 400,000 people who placed $1,000 reservation fee and it seems, many of them are taking back their money now.
As a proof, some posted their Tesla Model 3 cancellation forms on social media and these have been circulating online. In response to the backlash of meeting with Trump, Musk said that he is only trying to keep the communication open so he can push his ideas.
Meanwhile, CNBC reported that the number of buyers who canceled their Tesla Model 3 reservation is not known. Tesla will begin production of the $35,000 electric car in mid-2017 and by the end of the year the company is expecting to hit its mass prouction phase.
