Nintendo Denies Reports Of Plan To Release New Handheld Device To Succeed 3DS

There have been a lot of reports suggesting that Nintendo is planning to release a successor to its current handheld game console, the 3DS. However, the video game company has dispelled these reports saying that the 3DS and its new Nintendo Switch hybrid game console can co-exist.

The release of the Switch placed the Nintendo 3DS on a delicate spot. The Switch, being a hybrid, can be a home console and may also be converted into a handheld. The handheld feature of the new Nintendo hybrid video game console led many to believe that the current handheld of the company may be abandoned.

A lot of reports have quoted a statement made by Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima on the Japanese Newspaper, Kyoto Shinbun, and reported that the video game company is developing a successor for its current handheld gaming device.

A number of reports also quoted a twitter post from Japanese analyst Dr. Serkan Toto. "He doesn't give more details, but he (referring to Kimishima) seems to actually mean an entirely new machine", Toto wrote on his twitter, "not a 3DS update or refresh".

Nintendo clarified the reports in its recently published full Q&A transcript from the company's financial result briefing. Nintendo Everything provided a translation of what Kimishima said about the Nintendo 3DS.

According to Kimishima, the Switch and 3DS can co-exist. He believes that its current hand held gaming device has a different demand and market as a portable system from Switch. He also said that the two devices have many differences. The differences pointed out by Kimishima are weight, price and games.

As for the plans for a successor to the Nintendo 3DS, Kimishima said that the company will keep considering it as always. The transcript made it clear that the company is always thinking about a new game device in contrast to the earlier reports that the company is thinking of releasing a new handheld unit.
