'Tales' Series Producer Leaves Bandai Namco To Create Bloodless & Less Violent RPG For Square Enix
Ceage SottoAfter taking part in 17 of Namco Bandai's "Tales" series, Hideo Baba is set on creating a new game. The producer announced the new RPG in an interview with a Japanese gaming magazine.
According to Famitsu, Baba talked about creating "Project Prelude Rune." The announced game might be good news to avid RPG enthusiasts, but a sad one for many "Tales" fans. The veteran won't be doing it under Namco Bandai, but with a new company within Square Enix.
Baba did not mention his decision to leave the company, where he worked since 2001. However, he told interviewers that he felt that it was the right time to pass on the "Tales" series to his younger staff. Bandai's decision to assign him to direct a different Intelectual Property (IP) solidified his resignation.
Baba did not produce the latest game of the series "Tales of Berseria," but was the producer for "Tales of Zestiria." He added that he wanted a chance to showcase his skills among the big players of the RPG genre. After leaving Bandai Namco, he reportedly approached Square Enix last year.
During their talk in October 2016, Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda had an idea. He wanted Baba to make a new IP while recruiting new talent. This led to the creation of a company within Square Enix headed by Hideo Baba, Studio Isolia.
In a post by Niche Gamer, the new company focuses on creators that craft new stories. Baba said that the company would bring in a new game without blood and violence. Previous "Tales" games seldom display overt violence and gore.
Baba also added that he hopes to make a game world that is inviting to new players. "Project Prelude Rune" might deviate from the violence brought in by many "slash and hack RPG's." The game's inspiration will be from anime and manga that according to Baba, he knew since he was a toddler.
He described the game as a no-nonsense, middle-fantasy RPG. It will feature popular fantasy races like dwarves, elves, and characters from the Norse Mythology. Aside from a few tidbits of information, "Project Prelude Rune" is still on development. The producer did not say when the game will be released.
