While a considerable number of notifications can be deemed bothersome, there are few that are important to read come what may. Likewise, some notifications are irrelevant after a certain time, but others are worth reading regardless of when you see them. For those notifications (and for the good-natured developers), Android O has an uber cool feature: 'timeout.'

The unique feature allows devs to set a time after which the notifications come to naught. This is useful especially to wipe out the jumbled collection of time-sensitive notifications. This feature has been cracked wide open by Developer João Dias (via JoaoApps).

As soon as he bumped into the feature in the Notification Builder section of Android O's documentation, Dias updated AutoNotification Tasker plugin for everyone and not just devices that are running Android O, in order to support this recently discovered functionality. AutoApps even released a video footage that shows a notification disappearing after 5 seconds.

It's worth noting that the support for the timeouts in Android's highly anticipated operating system, works only for applications whose makers have added specific code to their creation taking that feature into consideration. With this update, a user can oust notifications that never disappear in favor of ones that do. This is precisely what Dias' Tasker plugin AutoNotification does. It will be hardly surprising to see similar mobile solutions up for grabs in the Google Play Store later this year.

No prizes for guessing; this will only come to fruition if Google plans to retain the feature in future Android O builds bearing in mind how drastically things change between the original developer preview of the OS and the final stable release. However, given the user-friendly nature of Automatic Notification Timeouts feature it seems safe to say that the functionality is not going anywhere.
