Samsung Eyes 2027 for Solid-State Battery Launch, Initial Use Not in Smartphones
Austin JaySamsung SDI, part of the tech business Samsung, is slowly stepping away from lithium-ion batteries. The company is focusing on solid-state batteries and aims to introduce them in just a few years.
A new group has been put together to help make this production target happen.
The company's sub-division has been advancing this technology to replace what's commonly used. A plan is in place by Samsung SDI to debut this different kind within the next couple of years. To reach the goal, a fresh team was assembled and given the job to achieve solid-state batteries ready to be manufactured.
Samsung's pioneering solid-state battery tech will be in electric vehicles before becoming phones or tablets. While solid batteries aren't new, making millions has been tricky.
Samsung SDI is hurrying to sell its All-Solid batteries, putting Go Joo-young, the VP of their big battery section, in charge.
The company's primary goal is to launch things fast. Unlike the lithium batteries most use now, solid batteries work differently and are better. Solid batteries replace what moves charges between the two ends - known as the anode and cathode - starting a new age for batteries.
Using sulfide-based tech, Samsung SDI aims to put out solid-state batteries with over 900 watt-hours for each liter of energy capacity. These advanced batteries are planned to first go in electric cars, and then they'll wind up in energy storage systems and electronic items like phones, laptops, and tablets.
The ASB is an advanced energy storage system that switches charged particles between positive and negative plates, from fluid to solid, boosting security and competency. It has pros like increased energy density over standard lithium-ion batteries and reduced chance of blaze or blast.
How does this new battery work to improve on issues that old batteries had? With moving chunks from liquid to solid state, could that help stop fires from happening? There's also talk about it packing more power into a smaller space than previous styles, so electronics get slimmer yet more potent.

The Cheonan plant hosted a gathering to commemorate five fruitful years of teamwork between Samsung SDI and Volvo Trucks.
The collaboration first centered on providing batteries for Volvo's electric transports and haulers, but it will now branch out.
Volvo's top executive, Martin Lundstedt, swung by Samsung SDI to verify plans to broaden their bond to other areas. Construction equipment and massive battery bank innovations (ESS) will join the mix.
So far, the joint work of Samsung SDI and Volvo has won many. Samsung's cylindrical cells - made special for Volvo's electric FM using extra nickel - turned heads at expos.
By 2040, Volvo wants suppliers to add no additional emissions, matching how they move from diesel and gasoline to battery power.
Their union with Samsung SDI helps tremendously with this. At the event, Samsung SDI leader Choi Yoonho emphasized strengthening the alliance. He swore that whatever his company brings, it would always be the top stuff, whether that's staying safe, quality stuff, or saving time with their tech ideas. This could really help out Volvo's different parts, like trucks and buses, machinery, and the batteries needed to power everything.
