In recent years, generative AI has garnered a lot of attention especially in 2023, wherein the tech giants like Microsoft and OpenAI have made particularly large investments in the subject, increasing their financing substantially in order to advance their technology even more. AI-powered chatbots like Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT have become more popular as a result of this trend, and Microsoft has intensified its AI integration across products, featuring the "Copilot" system for enhanced user experiences.

While both Microsoft Copilot and ChatGPT share similar technology, ChatGPT boasts more robust integrations and plugins. Microsoft Copilot, despite limiting users to 4,000 characters per chat, recently launched a free app for iOS and Android, incorporating DALL-E 3 technology and OpenAI's GPT-4 model.

ChatGPT Still Dominates the AI Competition

Microsoft's strategic move encourages users to transition from ChatGPT, offering similar features without the subscription cost. ChatGPT stands out with a voice mode feature for interactive conversations with the AI assistant. Microsoft generously provides users with a range of features akin to OpenAI's ChatGPT, distinguishing itself by offering them for free, in contrast to ChatGPT's subscription model.

Despite Microsoft Copilot seemingly offering all the features of ChatGPT without a $20 monthly subscription, a recent report by Appfigures reveals that Copilot's launch has not adversely affected ChatGPT's revenue or installs. The slow adoption of Copilot is attributed to inadequate promotion strategies and a subtle launch by Microsoft, which lacks search ads for discoverability.

Appfigures reports 2.1 million Copilot app downloads by January 5, 2023; 59% on Android and 41% on iOS. ChatGPT downloads initially surged to 500,000 but declined due to perceived issues, including diminished performance and rumors of OpenAI facing financial challenges.

While Copilot's quiet launch may not directly impact ChatGPT, the latter maintains a broader user base despite download stagnation.

According to another source, celebrating its first anniversary in November, ChatGPT's mobile applications have generated an impressive revenue of nearly $30 million. While some apps have seen tremendous financial success on mobile platforms, ChatGPT's unique selling point is its web-based subscription service, which a significant portion of its user base favors. Therefore, the mobile revenue only represents a fraction of the total earnings.

However, there hasn't been as much interest in Copilot. This could be due to several things: ChatGPT's devoted user base might be hesitant to switch; potential customers might have missed Copilot's debut due to a lack of marketing and the introduction during the holiday season. Furthermore, some users could find the extensive Bing connection unappealing, though it's unclear how many chose not to download Copilot for this reason.

Despite these challenges, Copilot has not managed to dethrone ChatGPT as the leading AI chatbot. Meanwhile, Microsoft continues exploring innovative AI technology applications, including introducing a dedicated Copilot button on personal computers.

Microsoft Copilot Quietly Integrates OpenAI's GPT-4 Turbo for Enhanced AI Assistance

GPT-4 Turbo, an enhanced version of OpenAI's robust language model, is currently free to use in Microsoft Copilot. This surprise rollout enhances Copilot users' productivity, offering improved capabilities without additional costs. Starting in December, the phased rollout will gradually provide users access to GPT-4 Turbo.

Unlike the typical high-profile product update, Microsoft opted for a phased approach, making the feature available to many users. To use GPT-4 Turbo in Copilot, users must visit the official Copilot website, view the page's source code, search for "gpt4t," and confirm account access. Although GPT-4 Turbo is in preview, not entirely stable, and may have limitations, users can explore its capabilities in Copilot. As it quietly integrates into Copilot, the impact of GPT-4 Turbo on AI tool usage remains to be seen, with its potential to transform daily routines and elevate AI assistance.
