iOS 17.4 Released with Urgent Security Fixes - Apple Issues Immediate Update Advisory

Austin Jay

To bolster its defenses against possible security breaches, Apple has swiftly issued iOS 17.4, which consumers are advised to install immediately on their iPhones. The discovery of at least four security flaws-two of which have already been used in actual attacks-has raised the urgency.

Apple is keeping quiet about the nature of these flaws to reduce the danger by making sure users upgrade before any hackers take advantage of this information.

Apple Responds Swiftly to Security Threats with iOS 17.4 Update.

The iPhone operating system's Kernel has the first vulnerability already exploited. It is identified by the tracking number CVE-2024-23225. Thanks to this vulnerability, an attacker with arbitrary Kernel read and write capabilities could circumvent memory safeguards. Given that Apple has confirmed reports of possible exploitation, the update is even more critical for consumers' device security.

According to Apple, iOS 16.7.6 addresses this specific issue for customers with earlier devices.

Another critical bug fixed in iOS 17.4 concerns RTKit, the real-time operating system used in various Apple devices such as AirPods, Siri Remote, Apple Pencil 2, and Smart Keyboard Folio. Tracked as CVE-2024-23296, this flaw could empower an attacker with arbitrary Kernel read and write capability to bypass kernel memory protections. Like the Kernel vulnerability, Apple is aware of real-world exploits associated with this issue.

Despite the severity of these security threats, Sean Wright, Head of Application Security at Featurespace, reassures users that successfully executing such attacks would be "extremely difficult." He explains that potential attackers must deceive victims into installing malicious applications or exploiting unpatched vulnerabilities that haven't been addressed yet.

Why the Urgency? Apple Highlights Key Features and Urges Immediate Update

Beyond addressing critical security vulnerabilities, iOS 17.4 brings significant changes for European Union (EU) users, allowing iPhones to be open to sideloading. This update also enhances the Stolen Device Protection feature, ensuring that even if a device is stolen, additional authentication is required to access sensitive information, providing users with an extra layer of security.

The release of iOS 17.4 coincides with Apple's decision to open up real-time Apple Card transactions to third-party budgeting apps, extending beyond Mint for the first time. This move comes as Mint, which added support for Apple Card in 2022, was folded into Credit Karma at the beginning of this year.

Now, users can leverage third-party budgeting apps like Monarch, YNAB, and Copilot to track their Apple Card transactions seamlessly.

The update introduces enhancements, including emoji additions such as a lime wedge, nodding and shaking heads, a phoenix, and a mushroom. Furthermore, the Apple Podcast app now supports English, Spanish, French, and German transcripts, with text highlighting in sync with the audio. Improvements to Stolen Device Protection, caller ID displaying information for Apple-verified businesses, and Siri announcing messages in any supported language are also part of the update.

Apple ensures that EU users benefit from alternative app marketplaces, expanded web browser engine support, and diverse payment methods, complying with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Although these changes are EU-specific, they represent a significant shift that could influence similar adjustments in other regions.

To safeguard against potential security threats and experience the latest features, Apple users are strongly advised to update to iOS 17.4 immediately. The update can be accessed by navigating to the iPhone's Settings > General > Software Update and downloading/installing it promptly.

In reaffirming its commitment to swift action against security vulnerabilities and continuous improvement, Apple underscores its dedication to user safety and a seamless digital experience. By staying updated and secure with iOS 17.4, users can confidently navigate their Apple devices, knowing they are equipped with the latest defenses and enhancements.
