The grapevine was abuzz with rumors and indications that Microsoft would not be calling the Windows 8 apps Metro Apps; however, it was not known what the new name would be . Now, per reports, the name has been revealed and Microsoft is set to call the apps Windows 8 Store Apps.
This information was brought to light at Microsoft Build Developers conference on Tuesday, Oct. 30, where Microsoft's Will Tschumy headed a session called The Principles of Microsoft Design, taking the developers through the company's approach to the design.
During the session, Tom Warren of The Verge asked what should users call Windows 8 Apps. To his question, Will Tschumy answered by saying that the apps should be called Windows 8 Store Apps. It is not yet certain if Windows 8 users will accept the name change, since everyone has gotten so use to calling these apps Metro Apps.
Back in August, Microsoft announced to everyone that it would be dropping the Metro name, and that from the start, the term was only a codename. However, not too long after, it was said that a European company called Metro Group, had asked Microsoft to drop the title or face a lawsuit. Quite a few terms came along after, but did not caught on since the name Metro was so catchy and easy to say.
In the end, it doesn't matter what Microsoft or anyone else for that matter chooses to call Windows 8 design and apps. What matters the most right now, is whether Windows 8 is worth using, is it another Windows Vista debacle, or has Microsoft found a way to kill two birds with one stone.
Apple has chosen to split its desktop OS from its tablet OS, and it seems to be working well for the company. Time will tell if Microsoft has chosen to walk down the correct path.
