The next-generation of Apple's Mac operating system, OS X 10.9, is expected to integrate Siri and Maps, per reports.
9to5mac reports that its reliable sources say that early builds of OS X 10.9 integrate Apple's Siri voice command software just like the latest iPad models running on the company's newest operating system iOS 6.
Currently, Siri is available only on certain iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches and it is not certain if Siri will be available to all Mac users. However, Apple's Dictation app, which is similar to Siri, is available on all Macs capable of running Mountain Lion, the current Mac operating system that introduced Dictation.
Additionally, Apple's latest Maps service introduced in iOS 6, which has received a lot of criticism, is also expected to make it to the OS X 10.9. Similar to iOS devices, if the feature moves past the early testing stage, developers will be able to embed a map into their applications for the Mac App Store.
"With this MapKit framework, as developers refer to it for iOS, in OS X 10.9, it is also possible that Apple will extend its own work on mapping on the Mac besides integration for developers. It is possible that Apple will want its own full-fledged Maps app on the Mac, but we have not been able to confirm that as of yet," reported 9to5mac.
Previously, reports indicated that computers running on OS X 10.9 from California Bay area IP addresses visited Web sites. The location is where Apple's headquarters is situated. The current version of OS X, Mountain Lion, was released in July this year and developers previewed it in February. If the company follows a similar trend then the OS X 10.9 should be released by the middle of next year.
Apple has named its previous Mac operating systems on big cats. It will be interesting to know what the OS X will be called. Any guesses?
