SkyDrive on the Xbox 360 is a match made in heaven. No seriously, it is. Hardcore and casual gamers alike have been waiting for the day Microsoft would integrate SkyDrive into the Xbox 360, and finally, that day has come.
Today at 10am PT (1pm EST), Xbox 360 owners should keep an eye out on their Dashboard for the inevitable appearance of the SkyDrive application. This application is going to link the cloud to your television or whatever else that is used to view contents from your Xbox 360 game console.
Users will be able to connect any file from the Web, smartphone, Windows desktop, or Mac right to their Xbox 360 with the SkyDrive application. Furthermore, Windows Phone 8 owners will have the option to connect their smartphone to the Xbox 360. This will automatically sync files back and forth from the 360 and the Windows Phone device. How awesome that?
The SkyDrive app will take advantage of Kinect voice, Kinect gesture controls, and the traditional controller navigation. At the moment, Kinect voice is not yet available in every language, so some users will have to make due with gesture controls and the game controller to get things done.
According to Microsoft, usage of SkyDrive has doubled in the last 6 months. This is due to the release of SkyDrive's synchronization applications and other updates that make the app more intuitive and useful. The application is available both on Windows and Mac.
SkyDrive on the Xbox 360 could be a killer application if Microsoft allow gamers to upload game saves to the service. Uploading game saves to the cloud is already possible as there is a 512MB space available to Gold members. However, this is not done via SkyDrive. It is possible Microsoft might change this to make things more unified. Wouldn't that be something?
