Just in time for the launch of the BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, the BlackBerry app store has surpassed 100,000 apps. In the last seven weeks alone, developers have added 30,000 apps; bringing the number close to Microsoft Windows Phone 150,000 apps count.
It's an impressive feat for Research in Motion, and new customers of its BlackBerry Z10 smartphone will have a large amount of application choices to choose from. Today, BlackBerry Z10 owners can download such apps like OpenTable, The Wall Street Journal and Amazon Kindle. In the coming weeks, the following apps will be available: CNN, The Daily Show, eBay, eMusic, Maxim, MLB at Bat, MTV News, Pageonce, PGA, Rdio, Skype, Soundhound, and Viber.
RIM has been courting developers all over the world long before the announcement of the first BlackBerry Z10 smartphone, hence why there are so many apps available in the store so early in the game.
"The response to the BlackBerry 10 platform and applications has been outstanding. Customers are thrilled with the applications already available, and the catalog just keeps growing, now with more than 100,000 apps," said Martyn Mallick, VP of Global Alliances at BlackBerry. "Top brands and application providers are joining us every day and are seeing the benefits of being early supporters of the new platform. We constantly hear from developers that the BlackBerry 10 tools are easy to build with and that we provide opportunities for app differentiation that they do not see on other platforms."
However, not everything is as it seems. The majority of apps in the BlackBerry 10 store, 70,000 to be exact, are apps ported directly from Android, which means they lack the ability to take full advantage of BlackBerry 10's UI, and will not run as efficiently as native apps. Therefore, in a sense, the Blackberry 10 store only has 30,000 apps, while everything else is pure Android.
RIM might want to come clean about the apps situation, but for some reason the company will leave it up to users to find out for themselves.
