The Apple App Store is currently the most popular app platform with over 850,000 apps as of May 2013, and 50 billion app downloads. Following closely behind is Android with over 800,000 app in the Google Play Store as of February 2013 and 48 billion app downloads, proving that Android could potentially unseat app as the most popular platform for apps.
Samsung devices drive Android's growth, and though other OEMs such as HTC play a part in this, yet at the moment, Samsung is a bit of a lone ranger controlling the majority of Android's market share. Because of this, the Google Play Store has expanded quickly, despite having a community that prefers free apps.
Currently, there are over 900 million Android devices on the market, and only 600 million Apple iOS devices. This means Apple could soon become the secondary platform for app development as developers might find it best to side with the platform with the highest number of users. While this could be easy for app developers that offer content for free, developers who offer paid content might choose iOS over Android for the time being.
According to the Business Insider, "Android, however, has recently won over growing number of app developers, with even the BBC moving to a new approach that attempts to deliver its popular apps simultaneously on both platforms. Although few apps launch first on Android, a growing number of the most popular are now available on both and the gap between launches is narrowing. Broadcaster Sky has developed applications specifically targeting the most popular mobile phone models."
Furthermore, Business Insider's Matt Warman believes Google could take the lead in the number of apps available in its store compared to iOS by October 2013. Such a revelation could be a blow to Apple, as the amount of apps in the App Store has long been something the company has bragged about for years.
