As we anticipated, Apple has finally announced the 10th version of its Mac operating system at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2013, and this time the Cupertino-based technology company has drifted away from naming the new OS after some big cat. Apple's new OS X 10.9 is called 'Mavericks' and promises to come with some new and amazing features.
We will be talking about many other features in our other reports, but here we are going to talk about OS X 10.9 Mavericks' Safari.
The new Safari has also got a big overhaul with a superfast scrolling at almost 60 frames per second and a brand new Home page. However, the biggest improvement we could see among the many new changes in the Safari app is its under the hood feature that allows your battery to last longer.
A normal user never thinks about how much battery he consumes while using Safari with other programs. For example, if you have opened a website that uses lots of animations and graphics, it automatically consumes more power and decreases battery life. And, when you minimize or overlap the Safari in that state with some other window, the percentage of battery usage remains the same.
However, in the OS X 10.9 Mavericks, Safari becomes very intelligent with the launch of a new application, App Nap. In the new version, if you open a website that requires extensive use of battery, you will not have to close it in order to save some juice.
The moment another window overlaps the Safari, or the application is minimized, the Safari consumes less power instantly.
The feature works just as a laptop when put in 'Sleep' mode. The App Nap optimizes the battery usage and brings down the battery use by putting some applications to sleep when they are not in use. Same way, Safari also goes into sleep when it is overlapped of minimized but the moment it is maximized or brought to the main screen, it starts working.
The new feature was demoed by Apple's senior vice president, Software Engineering, Craig Federighi, during the keynote of this year's WWDC.
It has also become easier to find your Bookmarks in Safari. The new browser has the Bookmarks at the same left sidebar of the window but now comes with a new tag of Shared Links. The new tab is integrated with Twitter and LinkedIn feeds.
The Reading List also becomes easier in the new version as the reader will be able to switch to the next reading material in the list without the user having to click on the next article. When the user scrolls down after the finishing the first article, the next article appears just after the first one finishes.
Safari also comes with some more features such as Private Browsing, Audio/Video Tagging and Block 3rd party cookies.
