Vine for Android has only been on the Google Play Store for a week; however, in that short period of time, the app has surpassed Instagram to become the most downloaded social application. So far, Vine has over 13 million downloads, a milestone achievement for an app that hasn't been on the store for too long.
Along with being the top social app ahead of Instagram, Vine has also taken the number 4 spot on the most downloaded app list, pushing Instagram to number 5. We had known Vine was growing in popularity, but even we were surprised to see the app achieving this amount of success on Android. The question is, how long before users get bored of posting 6 second videos on the Internet? Time will tell.
Vine is a bit like Intagram, but it's all about shooting videos than images. Vine allows for taking 6 seconds looping videos to share with your friends on social networks and other means. For those who are unware, the app was first released by Twitter on iOS in January of 2013, and in just a matter of days, the app became the number 1 downloaded app on iTunes. So far, Vine has grown twice as more as SocialCam, and other video sharing apps that seems to do similar things.
The Vine team has been playing for quite some time with the idea to support both front- and rear-facing camera, and as it stands, that idea seem to have paid off in spades.
Furthermore, Nick Bilton of the NYT noticed a few days ago that Vine shares on Twitter has surpassed Instagram for the first time ever. It is possible many folks are finding Vine to be the new cool kid in town, or it could be that everyone who downloaded Vine are just giving it a spin to see how it works, which means things could return to normal in a few days time.
Vine is available to download now in the App Store and Google Play Store.
