The latest Android 4.4 KitKat has started to roll out over the air (OTA) to the HTC One Developer Edition.
Just hours after HTC published the open source kernel and framework support files for the Google Play Edition of its HTC One, the OTA update has already started to roll out.
It's worth noting that, as always with OTA updates, the rollout is gradual and it may take some time to reach all devices. Samsung has also released the source kernel and support files for its Galaxy S4 Developer Edition and the OTA update to Android 4.4 KitKat should kick off shortly.
In the meantime, you can find the HTC files on the company's developer website at this link, or get Samsung's file on its open source website here. HTC's files weigh in at roughly 370MB, while Samsung's ZIP file weighs 399MB.
Various users on the XDA Developers forum have already reported receiving the Android 4.4 KitKat update for their HTC One Google Play Edition, noting that the file weighs in at 305MB. The update brings the firmware version to Android 4.4 KRT 16S.
As usual, an XDA user broke the ice and captured the download link for the OTA update, which is available here.
The new Android 4.4 KitKat is expected to bring several neat improvements and new features to the HTC One Developer Edition. It will not, however, include the Google Experience Launcher found on the Nexus 5. On the other hand, the update does come with the fixes Google made last week to address radio connectivity and encryption issues.
The Samsung Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition is expected to receive an OTA update to Android 4.4 KitKat very soon as well. The last time that HTC and Samsung published the open source files of their devices' firmware, the OTA update started to roll out within 24 hours.
Once all Nexus and Google Play devices are updated to the very latest Android 4.4 KitKat, the software will gradually start to roll out to other devices as well. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available.
