Small-size tablets have become increasingly popular, as many consumers find 7- or 8-inch tablets easier to manage and operate, not to mention more affordable. Apple joined the party with its original iPad Mini, which enjoyed great success but also received some criticism for not rocking the company's iconic Retina display.

The company addressed those complaints with its second-generation iPad Mini in 2013, adding a Retina display and also some notable improvements. Apple has continued selling the first-generation iPad Mini for $299, while the Retina display and superior internals in the second generation have commanded a price bump to $399.99 for the entry-level model.

As a reminder, the second-generation iPad Mini comes with a 7.9-inch LED backlit multi-touch IPS display with a Retina resolution of 2048 x 1536 and a high pixel density of 326 pixels per inch (ppi). Moreover, the iPad Mini with Retina display also packs Apple's powerful A7 processor and M7 co-processor on 64-bit architecture, just like the flagship iPhone 5S and full-size iPad Air.

In other words, the iPad Mini with Retina display may have a more compact form factor, but it is still a powerhouse under the hood. Other specs include 16GB of internal storage capacity, a 5-megapixel iSight camera with face detection, autofocus, backside illumination, Hybrid IR filter, HDR, video stabilization, 1080p video recording, and other high-end features, as well as a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera for video calls. The tablet runs Apple's latest iOS 7 operating system and has a 23.8Whr battery that should last for up to 10 hours of usage on a single charge.

While Apple is charging $399.99 for the entry-level 16GB Wi-Fi-only iPad Mini, Best Buy is offering a $50 discount on the same model.

The 16GB Wi-Fi iPad Mini with Retina display is now available for $349.99 from Best Buy and the retailer is also throwing in free shipping with the order. The deal appears to be available at the time of writing, but it may not last for long.
