AT&T Nexus 6 stock pulled and sent back to Motorola over software bug

The Nexus 6 seems to be off to a rocky start and the latest hurdle affects the AT&T version of the handset, which was pulled over some software bug.

The new-generation Nexus smartphone made in collaboration with Motorola is by all means a top-notch flagship device and is definitely considered one of the hottest devices of this year. The handset boasts high-end specs and features all around and comes in the top-tier category of the smartphone market, but so far it has been quite elusive.

When it went up for pre-order on Google Play, the Nexus 6 sold out in less than 24 hours. Motorola launched the smartphone on its website as well, but similarly went out of stock in no time. Google promised to replenish inventory every Wednesday, but whatever amount of units it added was not enough to keep the smartphone in stock.

Carriers eventually launched their versions of the Nexus 6, but it doesn't seem to be very smooth either. AT&T was the first to start offering the device on Nov. 12, followed by Sprint on Nov. 14, and T-Mobile on Nov. 19, one week later than previously scheduled. Sprint received some heavy criticism for its decision to price the Nexus 6 at a higher price point compared to the Google Play pricing, and recently slashed $50 off the price tag.

Nexus 6 issues keep surfacing, however, and this time the AT&T version of the smartphone is affected. As it turns out, AT&T temporarily pulled the plug on Nexus 6 sales because it had to return all inventory to Motorola.

According to the folks over at Droid-Life, the reason behind this situation is that Motorola sent the wrong software to AT&T. It remains unclear at this point just what exactly this entails, but it appears that only initial shipments were impacted.

AT&T reportedly says the issue stems from a "bug," while customers who bought an AT&T Nexus 6 report that the device's screen goes black when powered on, and the handset won't connect to service. So far, only the AT&T version of the smartphone seems to be affected.

While the carrier believes that only the first Nexus 6 shipments that went into AT&T stores are affected, it thought best to pull all stock as a precautionary measure. Motorola is reportedly aware of the issue and is working on a solution.

In other words, the AT&T Nexus 6 is temporarily unavailable, but everything should be just fine once it gets back in stock. So far neither AT&T nor Motorola have provided a timeframe for when this will happen, but it shouldn't take too long.

For the time being, the Nexus 6 smartphone from AT&T appears as out of stock on the carrier's website. We'll keep you up to date as soon as we learn more, so stay tuned.
