Sony Xperia Z2, Xperia Z3 Android 5.0 Lollipop update set for early 2015
Alexandra BurlacuSony has officially announced that it will start rolling out the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop OS to its core Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 early next year.
Android 5.0 Lollipop is slowly making its way to more smartphones and tablets worldwide, but the rollout is gradual. Back in November, word came out that the latest Android version was in testing for some Sony Xperia devices, but no timeframe was available for when it would actually start rolling out.
The new software version has been tested in beta form for the Sony Xperia Z1, Xperia Z2, and Xperia Z3, in order to ensure that everything is running smoothly before a wide, official rollout. Sony said that it would start pushing Android 5.0 Lollipop to these devices in 2015, but offered no additional details at that point.
The company has now provided more information on the matter, finally providing a timeframe for the rollout.
"We'll start the upgrade at beginning of 2015 for the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series," the company announced in a tweet on Wednesday, Dec. 17.
This still doesn't give a specific rollout date, but at least it narrows it down from "next year" to "the beginning of 2015." This means that the Sony Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 should start receiving the new Android 5.0 Lollipop sometime in January, or February at the latest.
Owners of other Xperia devices, meanwhile, will likely have to wait a bit longer to receive the upgrade. Sony has previously said that all devices part of its Xperia lineup will get a taste of Android 5.0 Lollipop at some point, but some will get it later than others.
The list of Sony Xperia devices set to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop includes the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z1 Compact, as well as the Xperia Z, ZL, ZR, Tablet Z, and Xperia Z Ultra.
The Sony Xperia Z Ultra Google Play Edition (GPE) has already received the Lollipop treat, and apparently the Xperia Z2 and Xperia Z3 are next in line to get the update early next year. We'll keep you up to date as soon as Sony provides more specific details, so stay tuned.
