HTC One M7 Unlocked and Developer Edition now getting Android 5.0 Lollipop
Alexandra BurlacuThe Unlocked and Developer Edition models of the HTC One M7 are now getting a taste of Android 5.0 Lollipop, as the rollout has officially commenced.
Android 5.0 Lollipop arrived back in October 2014 and has gradually been making its way to more devices ever since, but it has yet to reach a wider adoption. According to the latest figures from Google, the latest major version of Android reached only 1.6 percent of Android devices so far, which means that it still has quite a long road ahead of it.
HTC made significant efforts to update its devices to the latest Android version, but has not managed to meet its self-imposed 90-day deadline for delivering the update. Nevertheless, the company has updated the GPE and unlocked models of its flagship One M8, as well as some carrier versions of the smartphone in Europe and Canada, and the One M7 is next in line.
The HTC One M7 made its debut back in 2013 and it's still considered a powerful Android device even now, although it's not the latest and greatest anymore. The handset made a strong impression at the time due to its high-end specs and sleek design, proving to be a very popular device worldwide, and many owners are now waiting for a software update to improve the smartphone's capabilities.
When it comes to the U.S., the HTC One M7 has already started receiving an update to Android 5.0.1 Lollipop on Sprint, and more carriers are expected to follow suit shortly. While there are no other news available at this point regarding the update availability of other carrier versions of the handset, HTC has now revealed that the Unlocked and Developer Edition One M7 are now getting a treat. HTC's Mo Versi announced on Twitter that HTC has already started rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to these two One M7 variants, which means that the update should arrive momentarily.
"HTC One (M7) Unlocked and Dev owners! Enjoy the Lollipop update! OTA has been released," the company exec tweeted on Thursday, Feb. 5.
As always with OTA updates, however, keep in mind that the rollout is gradual and it will not reach all devices at the same time. This means that it may take a while for all Unlocked or Developer Edition HTC One M7 owners to get the update notification, but it shouldn't take long now.
