Motorola’s first-generation Moto G to receive Android 5.0 Lollipop in ‘upcoming weeks’
Alexandra BurlacuThe first-generation Motorola Moto G should receive an update to Android 5.0 Lollipop soon, in "upcoming weeks."
After Google unveiled its last major version of Android, Motorola was among the first OEMs to start delivering the update to its devices. In fact, some Motorola handsets even got the update before some Nexus handsets, but the company has not yet managed to update all of its smartphones.
The original Moto G (first generation), for instance, is still waiting to get a taste of Lollipop, but the wait should soon be over. According to a new report from SlashGear, first-generation Moto G owners have started to receive notifications from Motorola in the past week, informing them that Android 5.0 Lollipop is en route (see image above).
The original Moto G has been a widely popular device worldwide, as it raised the bar for what budget smartphones could offer in terms of specs and features. The handset launched with impressive specifications for its price point, and quickly turned out to be a best-seller.
The second-generation moto G was the first smartphone to officially receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop last year, and it's about time the original Moto G got the same treat as well.
Android 5.0 Lollipop is a major update that will bring a number of neat new features and improvements to the table, aiming to enhance the general experience. The latest Android version comes with a cleaner look thanks to Google's Material design elements, a new notifications screen, neat optimizations to improve battery performance, automatic encryption, and many other treats. Android 5.0 Lollipop also allows SELinux enforcing for all applications.
The Android 5.0 Lollipop update for the original Motorola Moto G should perform virtually the same as the update for the Moto G 4G in Brazil, the Moto X Pure Edition, the Nexus 6, and the second-generation Moto G.
In order to receive the update notification, Moto G first-gen users must have the latest version of Motorola Update Services installed.
Motorola has not announced a specific rollout date for the update, but it shouldn't be too long now. We'll keep you up to date as soon as more information becomes available, so stay tuned.
