PuzzlePhone: A simple modular smartphone
Mary Cris BalancioAmidst the big and successful companies, one small company dares to sail. Seems ambitious enough right? But no, that doesn't stop there, PuzzlePhone is said to be the first of its kind - the first modular phone to be developed and released in town. Seems like the big techno firms will have to add another to the list of something they have to watch for.
This also seems to be a bit of a pill for Google who has a modular smartphone called "Project Ara", which was supposed to be launched, was delayed due to the company's decision to further work on method for locking together the phone's platform modules.
The PuzzlePhone, which is made by the Finish start-up company, Circular Devices Ltd. has the simplest design among the smartphones today. The PuzzlePhone has only three interchangeable components, the brain, the spine, and the heart.
The brain component contains the processor, camera, RAM and also the storage area; the spine component of the phone has the screen and provides the central structure of the smartphone; while the heart component holds the battery and its secondary electronics.
The design of PuzzlePhone is simple, looks neat and looks sturdy. Its specs include a 5 inch full HD display, 3GB of RAM and internal memory of up to 64 GB. It runs on an octa-core processor with Android 6.0.
The PuzzlePhone from Circular Devices Ltd., after having been unveiled last December, has launched a crow funding campaign on Indiegogo to raise 250,000 USD in flexible funding. PuzzlePhone said that they were forced to do so as Indiegogo only allows PayPal payment for fixed funding campaigns.
The company further states that they only needed the Indiegogo Funding for the phone's manufacturing and shipping. Their R&D has already been funded by the European Union, this include securing their product development and rewards for their achievements. This funding also is proof of trust of the European supply chain which will back the development and production of the PuzzlePhone. The PuzzlePhone is set to arrive at the earliest in September 2016.
