'Red Dead Redemption' Xbox One Backward Compatibility Finally Happening; Will 'Grand Theft Auto' Be Next?
Jazz RosinFans of "Red Dead Redemption" finally have something to cheer for this week. Rockstar Games recently announced that the game is coming to the Xbox One as a backward compatible title.
This move was announced by Rockstar Games as part of Microsoft's Xbox One Compatibility Program.
Everyone who owns the original "Red Dead Redemption" on Xbox 360 will be able to play the game on the Xbox One console starting Friday, July 8.
Apart from the original "Red Dead Redemption," players can also play the "Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare" DLC and "Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition" on the Xbox One.
Rockstar also said that those who do not have the game yet can still buy a copy from the Games Store on Xbox One.
The announcement is good news to all "Red Dead Redemption" fans, who have been asking for this for a long time. Rockstar has been keeping quiet about this, and has not announced any plans to support Microsoft's Xbox Backwards Compatibility scheme until now.
"Red Dead Redemption" is one of the fans' most requested backwards compatible title for the Xbox One, along with "Call of Duty: Black Ops II," "Rise of the Tomb Raider" and "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim."
Prior to Rockstar's announcement, the game developer is said to be not participating in the scheme, but now that has been debunked.
In a previous interview with Eurogamer last year, Microsoft's group program manager Richard Irving confirmed that the company is "definitely engaged" with all publishers and developers when considering backwards compatible titles for the Xbox One.
"After the technological breakthrough that got backwards compatibility working, the next step was to figure out how to license all this content, originally released on Xbox 360, for Xbox One." Irving said.
Now that Rockstar Games confirmed "Red Dead Redemption" as a backwards compatible title, maybe there is a chance for other Rockstar titles like "Bully" and "Grand Theft Auto" to follow suit.
Being able to play "Red Dead Redemption" on the Xbox One might just tide the fans over until the "Red Dead Redemption 2" is officially announced.
