iOS 10 vs. Android N Beta; Apple vs Google: Which One Should Be Worried? New Features and Updates Compared
Jazz RosinThe Apple vs Google war rages on as people endlessly debate over who is dominating the mobile OS race. The latest OS for both companies, Apple's iOS 10 and Google's Android Nougat are not even out for public yet, but details from the beta testing are now being compared.
So who gets the OS crown this time? Let's compare the features and tweaks from both sides.
User Interface and Notifications
As far as UI and notifications are concerned, it seems that both OS have taken pages out of each other's books.
According to Know Your Mobile, the new Android N notification redesign resembles iOS notifications more. They are now much easier to read, have smaller fonts occupy the width of the screen. The notifs can also now be grouped together based on app.
IOS 10, on the other hand, is now allowing users to interact with the notifications without the need to unlock the phone, Android Pit reported. Swiping left gives access to the music player while swiping right opens the camera.
Apple users can also view the notifications simply by picking up their phones, a feature that Android N has yet to match.
Music and Photo Apps
iOS 10 now identifies people, places and objects on the photos and allows users to sort and search using these information. It also automatically arranges slideshows and videos of the best pictures.
These, however, are nothing new on Android, as Google's Photo app already has these features for almost a year.
The music app for the iOS 10 has also gone through major changes, giving it a simpler navigation interface. However, the iOS app still focuses on iTunes, compared to Android's Play Music which is built around both streaming and individually downloaded songs.
Siri Vs Google Now
Apple has recently opened voice assistant Siri to third party developers. This clearly puts the iOS 10 ahead of Android N, and its own voice assistant software Google Now still does not offer this.
At the moment, the list of supported apps are still very small. However, PC Tablet predicts that there will be more apps added to the mix by the end of 2016.
Final Thoughts
As far as improvements are concerned, it is safe to say that iOS 10 featured more major tweaks than Android N. As for which one is better, we still can't judge for sure until both OS come out of beta.
iOS 10 is currently under public beta, and the final public update is said to be out by Autumn 2016, Macworld reported.
Android N still does not have an official release date, although Google confirmed that N stands for Nougat, and not Nutella, on Twitter last week.
