'The Last Of Us 2' Still On Hold Because Of 'Uncharted 4' DLC? Game Not In Development Yet, Says Naughty Dog
Jazz RosinThe critically acclaimed post-apocalypse game "The Last of Us" was so good that it comes no surprise that fans are already asking for the sequel. Fans should not hold their breath, however, as Naughty Dog has not even started on its development yet.
According to Gamerant, Naughty Dog's programmer and creative director Neil Druckmann has previously dropped some hints that the studio will be developing a sequel for "The Last of Us."
Druckmann mentioned before about working on "prototypes for different ideas within 'The Last of Us' universe" with fellow Naughty Dog director Bruce Straley prior to jumping onto their next project, another hit-maker "Uncharted 4: A Thief's End."
"Without going into specific genres [there were] ideas outside the 'The Last of Us'," Druckmann said. "All those things were left on hold when we had to come onto 'Uncharted 4' to direct the project."
Druckmann then said that the team will be able to focus on "The Last of Us" once they have finished the single player DLC's for "Uncharted 4."
"And then, once we have enough resources, resurrect all those prototypes," the director said, "see where we're at, see where the teams at, what they're excited for and go from there."
Fans are not just waiting for Naughty Dog to start development on the next "The Last of Us" title. The planned movie adaptation for "The Last of Us" has been stuck in production hell for a long time, and has not been heard of for quite a while.
Speaking to 89.3 KPCC's The Frame, Druckmann confirmed that the production "hasn't moved anywhere in the past couple of years."
The game director also said that "The Last of Us" took them three and a half years to make, so fans should expect the sequel to come a few years after the single player DLC for "Uncharted 4" is done and dusted.
Meanwhile, Ellie's voice actress, Ashley Johnson, told Gamespot that she will "totally jump on board" to reprise her role in the next installment of "The Last of Us," although she said that the story of the first title can already stand on its own and needs no sequel.
"If they were to make another one, though, I would love to be a part of it," Johnson said.
What's next for "The Last of Us"? Stay tuned for updates. Meanwhile, here are the things fans want to see in the next installment.
