‘Overwatch’ Latest News: Comic Confirms First LGBT Character
Van DThe “Overwatch” character, Tracer, was recently confirmed to be a lesbian. The latest “Overwatch” comic revealed the character’s sexual orientation in the holiday story.
“Reflections,” the latest comic of “Overwatch,” focused on Tracer. In the story, Tracer was shown kissing another girl, Emily, whom she seems to be living with. Emily is not a member of “Overwatch,” but she appears to be very close to Tracer.
In the “Overwatch” comics, Tracer celebrated Christmas with Emily and surprised the latter with a scarf. They both kissed and later joined Winston’s dinner party. The story and scene confirmed the long rumors that Tracer may be gay. Lead writer Michael Chu tweeted that Tracer actually identifies as a lesbian.
Blizzard Entertainment previously teased that there are some LGBT characters in “Overwatch,” although Tracer is the first to be revealed, writes Entertainment Weekly. Blizzard said that similar to real life, variety in the “Overwatch” roster and their identities and backgrounds helps create a richer and deeper fictional universe as a whole. From the start, they always wanted the “Overwatch” universe to be inclusive and welcoming. They wanted the game to reflect the diversity of their players around the globe.
Blizzard’s announcement is a significant step for the gaming industry. It is expected for other game developers to closely observe how fans will react to the big revelation. LGBTQ representation in video games existed in the past 30 years, including “Moonmist,” “Fallout 2,” “Mortal Kombat” and “The Last of Us.”
“Overwatch” is also popular for the shipping of its 23 playable characters. Widow Tracer is one of the most popular ships of the game, which features the romantic pairing of Tracer and Widowmaker. The two characters have a huge rivalry and their connections are full of purpose, which make them great characters in the story and overall gameplay. It made more sense to announce a Widow Tracer relationship together with Tracer being gay. More updates and details on “Overwatch” are expected soon.
