Tesla New Autopilot & Model 3 Update: Second-Generation Autopilot System To Make EVs Fully Autonomous; Special Model 3 Event Teased
Ritwik RoyTesla has rolled out its new Autopilot system and only a handful of lucky owners will be able to try out the new Autopilot features this week. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said that the new features have been made possible by the second-generation hardware system. By the end of 2017, Musk expects all Tesla electric vehicles to be completely autonomous. A group of 1,000 testers will be able to try out the new Autopilot features and other owners by end of the week.
According to Business Insider, the new Tesla cars will have eight cameras for Autopilot providing 60-degree visibility and 250 meters (820 feet) of range. The radar sensor has been endowed with enhanced processing powers that can see through fog, heavy rain and dust and even when another car is in front. Tesla is still going with 12 ultrasonic sensors but they have been upgraded to detect hard and soft objects nearly twice the distance of previous sensors.
The new Tesla vehicles are also using NVIDIA's Titan GPU that brings 40 times more computing power than previous ones. The new Autopilot system will cost $5,000 for new Tesla owners. The enhanced Autopilot mode will allow the Tesla EV to automatically change lanes, match speed to traffic conditions, park itself and merge on and off highways. Capability to maneuver around objects in complex situations has also been updated.
There is a host of other features that will make new Tesla vehicles fully autonomous. Meanwhile, Musk kept fans and investors guessing when Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas asked about the Tesla Model 3 while taking a tour of the automaker's Nevada Gigafactory. Musk did hint at some big upcoming announcements about Tesla Model 3.
Earlier, Musk had confirmed that he would hold a special unveiling event (the third part) for the Tesla Model 3 in the first quarter of 2017. However, it is highly likely that there will be delay in bringing the Model 3 to the market.
