Netflix’s ‘Voltron: Legendary Defenders’ Season Two Review: More Characters And More Backstories Explored

Cris Xander Juliano

The first season of the Netflix original series "Voltron: Legendary Defenders" was well received by critics when it premiered on June 2016. It is a reboot of the "Voltron" franchise with a mix of anime-style animation for the characters while CGI is used for Voltron action sequences. Season two premiered on Netflix on Jan. 20, 2017 which added more characters and explored backstories according to Polygon.

At the end of season one, the Paladins were separated and sent to different parts of the universe. Each character is trying to find their way back to each other at the start of season two.

However, the characters won't be reunited immediately on the first episode of the second season. Instead, the show will explore their individual struggles and will make you care about each character as backstories are told.

New characters are also introduced in the second season as the Paladins meet new friends during their individual journey. More enemies are also met as well.

The second season might be more emotional compared to the first season but it doesn't lack the action the latter has been known for. The Paladins discover that there are other groups of rebels who are also trying to battle Zarkon and the Galra Empire. The Paladins team up with these rebels and are able to learn new tricks on fighting Zarkon.

Meanwhile, according to IGN, the voice acting in the second season remains one of its assets of the show. The main cast; Josh Keaton as Shiro, Steven Yeun as Keith, Jeremy Shada as Lance, Tyler Labine as Hunk and Bex Taylor-Klaus as Pidge represent each character perfectly as well as impressive delivery of comedic timing.

The musical score also has been excellent throughout the season as it appeals to the 80's generation with combinations of orchestral arrangements, guitar riffs and synthesizers.
