Since the launch of OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion on July 25, some Mac users are already reporting glitches in the new OS from Apple.

Many users report a steep drop in battery life, which they say has been cut in half or worse compared to previous versions of the Mac OS. Some users tried to solve the problem by reinstalling Mountain Lion and even shutting down some of the new features of the OS, yet the battery issues continued to impact overall performance. Others noticed a temporary reprieve after they reset the machine's System Management Controller(SMC) but the problem returned after continued use.

Users have been flooding Apple support forums to discuss the shortcomings of the new OS. No one understands why the move from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion has caused a loss of battery performance; Ars Technica reported, "Right now there are only theories for the battery power drain problems, and Apple has yet to release a time frame fo when it could be fixed." Possible explanations include increased CPU usage, file permission errors, and some network access issues.

"Apple, however, has just recently started contacting users to investigate the issue. Apple support reps are asking users to log their machine for data and system information that could identify what the problem is," Ars reported.

Apple has started contacting users regarding complaints lodged in its complaints forum to resolve their issues. These users have been asked to help by logging machine data and system information which could help Apple pinpoint the source of the problem.

This issue appears to be a continuation of the battery drain experienced by the previous OS, Lion. Users also reported plummeting battery life following the launch of the iPhone 4S and the iOS 5 release. Many users highlighted the same issue, raising a question about Apple's quality standards.
