Square Enix Stops Making 'Deus Ex' Series; Focuses on Marvel Games Instead
Regin OlimberioSquare Enix reportedly set the RPG series "Deus Ex" on a tentative halt due to several factors which include the lukewarm reception of the latest "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided." Furthermore, the developer is reportedly busy taking on new projects with Marvel as of late.
To recall, "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" still managed to go first in the UK sales chart. However, Square Enix is not content with the result because other predecessors like "Human Revolution" did better. There is also a down surge with "Mankind Divided" sales after its launch in August last year.
Apparently, the decision to place "Deus Ex" on hiatus is not only triggered by the recent game's disappointing performance. The developer is also foreseeing the potential market for the newly-forged partnership with Marvel, according to Eurogamer.
Observers saw the dilemma of the partnership and the tendency to stretch the Square Enix resources. In fact, GameSpot said that what is being utilized for development for a possible Marvel Avengers game is the original studio built for "Deus Ex" titles.
Square Enix also has a lot on their plate that warranted a "Deus Ex" break. Sources claim that it is also busy with a new "Tomb Raider" iteration along with Crystal Dynamics. Recent updates note that "Shadow of the Tomb Raider" might release soon.
Meanwhile, there are hints that Square Enix is putting a fence only on new "Deus Ex," but will continue to support existing titles within the franchise. "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" has received free-to-play content called Breach mode. There is also a looming DLC pack which is eyeing release later this February.
The first "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" DLC released last year and the upcoming content will serve as prequel to the main storyline. As of now, there is limited information from Square Enix about "A Criminal's Past" DLC apart from being a step-back from the current timeline of "Mankind Divided" narrative. There are no indications of an exact release date either.
