BlackBerry Mercury Confirmed Release Date Announced
Cris Xander JulianoThe BlackBerry Mercury, the company's latest smartphone that will run the Android operating system is set to be released in the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2017 scheduled on Feb. 25 in Barcelona, Spain. The device was teased at the Consumer Electronic Show 2017 in Las Vegas a month ago.
According to a report by Express, invitations were sent out to the media by BlackBerry to take their first look at the newest device.
It's quite common for tech companies to unveil their devices a day before the start of the MWC. Just like last year, Samsung has revealed their Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge on a Sunday right before the start of the MWC 2016. This gives the company a slight advantage over their competition.
When the BlackBerry Mercury was briefly teased at the CES 2017, details of its specs were kept hidden from the public. Even the name "Mercury" was thought to be just the code name for the device.
TCL, the Chinese company that bought the rights to the BlackBerry brand name, recently released a video that shows off the device's elegant design which has influences from older models from the BlackBerry smartphones.
The device features an all-metallic body design that has a 4.2-inch touchscreen, which makes it a lot smaller than any Android or iOS devices. However, BlackBerry kept its physical QWERTY keyboard which has been the company's trademark over the years. The keyboard also allows its users to touch-scroll the keys to interact with icons on the display and swipe along to scroll through web pages or emails.
In addition, rumors suggest that the device will be powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor with 3GB of RAM and 3,200mAh battery. The device will also sport a 12MP camera which will feature the Sony IMX278 sensor, similar to the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL. It's also speculated that it will run the latest Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box.
