Samsung is currently the largest handset and smartphone manufacturer in the world. According to Verizon's CEO Lowell McAdam, Samsung may also develop a successful mobile operating system.

Companies like Apple and Reseach In Motion (RIM) both create their own software as well as hardware. With Samsung being a popular smartphone and tablet brand which creates an array of devices every year, it should not come as a surprise if the company develops a successful operating system of its own in the near future. According to a CNET report, Samsung executives also acknowledge that the company "needs to get away from its dependence on another company's operating system." 

"There's a potential elephant in the room with Samsung," McAdam says.

Currently, Google's Android and Apple's iOS dominate the mobile operating system market. A report from Gartner suggests that in the first quarter of this year, Android ruled the global operating system market with its 56.1 percent share followed by Apple which held 22.9 percent of the share. Symbian and BlackBerry OS occupied the third and fourth positions with 8.6 percent and a 6.9 percent shares, respectively. Recently, Microsoft has dived into the mobile operating system market with Windows Phone.

Samsung is one of the most popular Android-powered device manufacturers. Samsung already tried its own operating system, Bada, but the OS was not as powerful or robust as rivals Android and iOS.  The question remains whether the Korean conglomerate will develop a successful OS.
