Hulu fans that own a Google Chromecast streaming dongle are in for some good news, as Hulu Plus now has the ability to "cast" content directly to Google's gadget.
When Google launched its Chromecast device back in July, the streaming dongle had only one non-Google content source, namely Netflix. Hulu is Netflix' main rival in the market and now it has added support for Google's Chromecast.
"Hulu has added Chromecast support to their Hulu Plus app - just in time for the fall television season," announced Google in a blog post on Wednesday, Oct. 2. "Now you can easily enjoy your favorite shows, such as 'Modern Family,' 'New Girl' and 'Parks and Recreation,' on your big-screen TV by casting from Hulu Plus on your mobile phone or tablet. It's the same intuitive, remote-free experience you've come to enjoy with other Chromecast-supported apps, and is as simple as pressing the Cast button which will now appear in the app."
As expected, users will need to spend $8 per month for access to the Hulu Plus and corresponding mobile app to take advantage of the new Chromecast support.
To get things up and running, simply press the Chromecast button from any window in the Hulu Plus app. Of course, you will need the Chromecast app as well. Find it here for Android and at this link for iOS.
Google has promised from the start that it would work on adding more popular content to Chromecast. The new Hulu support is a first step in this direction, but more will likely follow shortly. HBO plans to support Chromecast as well in a future update, and heavyweights such as Pandora, Spotify and others are also expected to join the party.
Chromecast will gradually expand its reach and content, but for now the Hulu addition is a welcome surprise.
To start casting Hulu Plus content onto Chromecast, just make sure you have the latest version of the Hulu Plus app for Android or iOS. Meanwhile, if you don't have a Chromecast streaming dongle yet, you can get one from Google Play, Amazon, Best Buy.com or a Best Buy store.
