Microsoft Windows Phone 8 (WP8) smartphones have started to make their way to the shelves and Samsung, HTC, and Nokia have all unveiled their respective devices.
In October, Samsung launched its first WP8 phone, the ATIV S, and now rumors indicate that another WP8 Samsung smartphone, the ATIV Odyssey, is on its way. Nokia released its WP8 smartphone Lumia 920 on Nov. 9.
Here is a round-up of how the ATIV Odyssey and Lumia 920 measure up against each other.
Processor
The ATIV Odyssey is speculated to feature a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor that is clocked at 1.5GHz, whereas the Lumia 920 also features the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Qualcomm S4 processor, which Qualcomm claims has "best in-class performance."
Display
The ATIV Odyssey is expected to sport a 4.8-inch Super AMOLED display with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. On the other hand, the Lumia 920 has a slightly smaller 4.5-inch AMOLED PureMotion HD+ display with 1280 x 768 pixels resolution. Additionally, the Lumia 920 betters the ATIV Odyssey with 332 ppi density versus 306 ppi.
Weight, Thickness, and Body
The Lumia 920 measures 5.1 x 2.8 x 0.42 inches and weighs 6.52 ounces. The dimensions and weight of the ATIV Odyssey are not known; however, it is expected that the ATIV Odyssey will be similar to ATIV S which measures 5.40 x 2.78 x 0.34 inches and weighs 4.76 ounces.
Storage and Memory
The Lumia 920 has 32GB of on-board storage option and no option to expand the memory using a microSD card. The ATIV Odyssey is expected to include a 16GB on-board storage. Users will hope that Samsung offers an option to expand the memory using a microSD card.
Both smartphones offer 1GB of RAM.
Camera
The ATIV Odyssey is expected to sport an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with auto focus and LED flash, the device is expected to include a front-facing camera but details of the sensor are not known. The Lumia 920, on the other hand, features an 8.7-megapixel rear-facing camera (3552 x 2448 pixels) with LED flash and autofocus. The Lumia 920 also has a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera (1280 x 960 pixels).
Software
The Lumia 920 runs on Microsoft's WP8 OS and the ATIV Odyssey will also run on the WP8 platform.
Battery
A powerful 2000mAh battery powers the Lumia 920 and supports 17 hours and 10 hours of talk time on 2G and 3G, respectively. Battery details of the ATIV Odyssey are not currently available.
Connectivity
The Lumia 920 supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, and Near-Field Communication (NFC). Keeping abreast with the latest technology users will hope that ATIV Odyssey also features the same connectivity features like the Lumia 920.
Availability, Pricing, and Colors
Currently a c onfirmed launch date for the ATIV Odyssey is not known, but speculations suggest that the device will make its appearance by year end. Colors and pricing details of the smartphone are also not known.
Nokia disclosed that the unsubsidized Lumia 920 will cost approximately $800 and has started to ship the smartphone from Nov. 9. The Lumia 920 is available in yellow, white, red, black, and gray colors.
On paper, Samsung's ATIV Odyssey seems to be strong enough to give stiff competition to other WP8 phones, including the Lumia 920. Samsung is the current smartphone market leader, and time will tell if the Korean company's WP8-powered offerings can dominate the market just like its Android ones.
