Google's highly-touted flagship smartphone made by LG, the Nexus 4, which is running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean has already made its way to users, and now questions are arising if the previous iteration Nexus S will also get the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. Google has not officially released the software update to the Nexus S but an Android developer claims to have successfully ported the latest Jelly Bean to the smartphone.
A member of XDA-developers forum by the name of knzo claims to have released an Android 4.2 ROM for the Nexus S. The developer states that the ROM is stable and usable; but has certain issues and bugs which halts the smooth running of the latest Jelly Bean as a daily driver.
Unfortunately, the Android 4.2 ROM for Nexus S is not available to download anymore as the developer states that it will be put back when it is "ready to be used a daily driver".
The Nexus S manufactured by Samsung was released in 2010 and packed Android 2.3 Gingerbread and later received a software upgrade to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). However, Google confirmed that the Nexus S will not get any further software upgrades.
"There is no support for 4.2 on Nexus S and Xoom. Those devices should continue using 4.1.2. I can't comment about the future of Nexus S and Xoom, sorry," said Jean-Baptiste Queru, Technical Lead, Android Open Source Project, Google.
Nexus S is the third-generation of Google's smartphone family and the first manufactured by Samsung. The first and the second-generation smartphones, the Google G1 and the Nexus One, were both manufactured by HTC. The fourth-generation of Google's smartphone Galaxy Nexus was manufactured by Samsung and the latest fifth-generation Nexus 4 is made in collaboration with LG.
The Nexus S was the first Android to have Near-Field Communication (NFC) in both hardware and software, and sported impressive hardware specifications for the time which appealed to many smartphone users.
If you have the Nexus S will you upgrade to the unofficial 4.2 Jelly Bean when it is released by the XDA developer?
