Samsung Galaxy S3 started to get the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in October last year with Sprint getting the first honors to roll out the update over-the-air (OTA). However, Galaxy S3 users on AT&T had to wait till December before the update was finally pushed out only via the Samsung Kies software, but now AT&T Galaxy S3 owners can update their handsets to Jelly Bean, OTA.
Samsung Kies allows Galaxy S3 owners to update their devices manually through their PC. Previously, it seemed that Samsung Kies would be the only place where users could get the Jelly Bean update to their Galaxy S3. At the time, Samsung's support forum also indicated that the "update is available through Windows and Mac computers using the Samsung Kies software application only" and the "update will not be made available over-the-air."
However, AT&T has confirmed that the OTA update is available from Jan. 16.
"Finally, AT&T has told us that an OTA (over-the-air) update will be available beginning today to anyone who is still using Ice Cream Sandwich, though it'll require a WiFi connection," reported Engadget.
Many users have also reported that the update has started to arrive on their handsets. "Download was pretty slow...couple hours. It even self-terminated about 83% through although it happily restarted where it left off," per a user's comment on Android Central.
The Samsung Galaxy S3, which originally packed in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS) out of the box, has already sold 30 million units worldwide since its release in May last year.
The Jelly Bean update will bring enhancements to the Galaxy S3 including features like Google Now, Google Voice, and Project Butter, which improves the performance of the device and makes visuals and transitions much more smoother.
To check if you have received the update OTA go to the 'Settings' on your handset, then the 'About Device' section, then 'Software uUdate', and then select 'Update - Check for Updates'. If the update is available, then the software download will ask you to install.
